PK Series Rotors for PKII Pilot Scale Ultracentrifuges
Applications
Designed to take separations from final research to pilot scale processing, PK Series Rotors are used for particle separation via rate zonal separation and isopycnic banding, and can accept corrosive gradients.
Particle types separated include viruses, ribosomes, and other subcellular units with human and animal vaccines, viral vectors, gene therapy, cancer studies, serum and blood fractionation among the important fields of application.
Particles are separated on the basis of their buoyant density. They move under the force of gravity to the band with the same density as their own and remain in this band until recovered by discharging the rotor in liquid fractions after rotation stops.
These rotors can also be used for simple pelleting where the particles are recovered at the end of the run after adhering to the wall of the rotor.
PK3 models provide linear scale-up to simplify protocol development for increasing sample volumes.
The PK6 includes a Pre-Clarifier to eliminate the need for a separate step, saving time and increasing convenience and avoiding any possible contamination due to additional sample handling.

*After the purchase of one PK3 series rotor, other cores can be fitted to change the volume.
Linear scale-up
When developing a protocol and starting with a PKII Pilot Scale Centrifuge with PK3-200 rotor, changing to a PK3 rotor with standard 1.6 liter core gives a linear scale-up factor of 8:1.
Exactly the same time will be used to process 8x as much fluid as for the original volume.
No separation parameter is changed. No protocol development is required.
Massive time savings are achieved with guaranteed results.
Changing to a KII Production Scale Ultracentrifuge with K3 rotor gives a 16:1 scale-up factor with the same advantages.
