NEW ePKII Pilot Scale Ultracentrifuge
with Electric Drive and Compact Footprint for
Process Development and Small Scale Production

Reinforcing Alfa Wassermann's offering of ultracentrifugation technology across a wide range of volumes, the ePKII Pilot Scale Ultracentrifuge introduces a new electric drive combined with minimal space requirements and industry-standard PLC controls.

Ideal for biotech companies and start-ups with limited space and facilities, the ePKII also responds to the needs of big pharma in pilot scale production. Offering a range of patented scale rotors, the ePKII can produce linear scale-up results with up to 100 liters and these are transferable to the full production scale model eKII.

The ePKII Pilot Scale Ultracentrifuge provides new opportunities for benefitting from continuous flow ultracentrifugation techniques.

Economical operation
By incorporating the latest design in industrial induction motor technology, Alfa Wassermann has succeeded in reducing power consumption while providing all the separating force necessary to achieve the separation, isolation, concentration and purification required in downstream processing. Power used is typically in the 15A range for most of the run.

Reducing the range of utilities needed has dispensed with external compressor and associated hoses and thus further reduced costs in setting up and running the system.

Minimal space requirements
By carefully thought out design, AW has achieved a further reduction in the ultracentrifuge footprint. Economies of space extend to as much as 40% compared to other continuous flow centrifuges with the choice of saving on cleanroom construction costs or placing more instruments in existing plant and eliminating new construction altogether.

Smart configuration enables the control console to be parked beneath the lift and reduce required total space while increasing access for operators to the centrifuge and rotor.

Rugged construction
The development of a totally new drive system has enabled AW to introduce an extremely reliable centrifuge.

The robust induction motor is capable of extended operation and can mimic the run profiles of the famous air drive systems for which Alfa Wassermann is world-renowned.

The major part of the system is constructed out of stainless steel for cleanroom compatibility and also provides long endurance. (Many AW units still operate daily after more than 30 years).

Simplified operation
With only single phase electricity used, the general system is simple to set up and operate with a minimum number of connections.

All parameters are monitored and displayed on a touch-sensitive industrial grade screen. Traffic light color coding confirms status at a glance, eliminating the need to read actual figures (also shown) in many cases. All green, all go!

Trending screens provide a continuous data stream during operation of all the critical running parameters in parallel with descriptive Alarms. Trouble shooting menus allow discrete manipulation of all functions during maintenance. Audit trail records all interventions to the system.

Users can process data in their preferred Windows®-based software using the universal CSV format, readable by all databases, spreadsheets and LIMS.

Conformity to industrial standards
The eSeries introduces PLC controls, the preferred standard for the pharmaceutical industry.

With CE marking, compliance with GAMP for automated production, with 21 CFR part 21 hybrid version data handling and with a number of other standards recognized industry-wide, use of the ePKII also assists producers in declaring conformity with cGMP standards.

Ultimate product safety
Full product protection is part of the design of the ePKII. The motor is itself cooled to limit heat transfer to the product.

The rotor chamber is refrigerated to protect the product pathway. An optional manifold and sealing of the console ensure that heat from all sources is removed immediately from the production area thus maintaining the ultimate safe environment for the product

Flow rates are permanently monitored and controlled to sustain the optimum conditions for separation and purification.

Built-in convenience
A movable screen enables installation of the ePKII in any suitable space. Users can change the screen mounting or position themselves. The screen can even face to the rear to assist servicing with information display for engineers.

Maintenance time is reduced thanks to the easier access to assemblies in the console and components have improved design to simplify setting up for runs.
